Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 is once again making headlines, with new leaks suggesting it will retain the same A18 chipset and 8GB RAM found in the iPhone 16. For those planning to upgrade, this may come as a surprise, as expectations for a major performance leap were high.
According to a recent report by industry analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 17 will continue to use the A18 chip based on TSMC’s 3nm process. This architecture has proven effective in delivering excellent power efficiency and reliable performance for everyday use, gaming, and AI-driven features introduced in iOS. Despite earlier speculation that Apple could introduce an A19 chip in this generation, Pu’s analysis confirms that at least the base model will not see this change.

In terms of memory, the iPhone 17 is expected to ship with 8GB of RAM—identical to its predecessor. While sufficient for general usage and Apple Intelligence features, some experts argue that future demands from AI processing and high-end gaming would be better supported by 12GB of RAM. Notably, this expanded RAM configuration is expected in the iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, and a newly rumored variant, the iPhone 17 Air, creating a more distinct gap between the base and premium models.
If these details hold, the iPhone 17 may be perceived as a relatively minor upgrade—akin to an “iPhone 16S.” Without significant hardware changes, such as a new chip or higher RAM capacity, consumers may see little incentive to switch from the current generation. However, higher-end models in the lineup are still expected to deliver meaningful improvements for power users.
As of now, Apple has not made any official announcements regarding the iPhone 17 series. Still, following the company’s usual release cycle, the launch is anticipated to take place in September 2025. Alongside the standard iPhone 17, Apple is likely to unveil the iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
