According to YM Cinema magazine, Apple’s latest patent reveals that the company is working on a groundbreaking image sensor featuring up to 20 stops of dynamic range. This innovation could potentially deliver imaging performance on par with or even better than professional cinema cameras such as the ARRI ALEXA 35, making it far superior to current smartphones.

Next-Gen Image Sensor Technology

Apple’s newly patented “Stacked Pixel Image Sensor with High Dynamic Range and Low Noise” introduces a dual-stacked silicon chip design. This setup combines multi-layer light capture with on-chip noise reduction technology, enabling a dynamic range of 20 stops and an impressive contrast ratio of 1,048,576:1. This allows the sensor to capture both the brightest highlights and deepest shadows with remarkable detail.

For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max currently achieves around 11–13 stops of dynamic range, while the human eye measures approximately 20–30 stops. If Apple successfully commercializes this innovation, iPhone photography could experience a massive leap in detail, clarity, and depth.

Key Features

The sensor’s top layer manages photoelectric capture, while the bottom layer processes the image and reduces noise using a compact 3T pixel structure. Apple’s version also incorporates LOFIC technology, designed to preserve highlight and shadow details, along with pixel-level real-time noise reduction to suppress thermal noise and enhance image quality.

Reports on Weibo suggest that Apple has already completed physical development of the sensor and is currently testing it on iPhone development units, increasing the likelihood of mass production in the near future.

Advanced Cooling and Aperture Control

The patent further highlights Apple’s plan to integrate an active VC cooling system and a flexible aperture film, both designed to push cinematic mobile imaging closer to professional-grade performance. By combining hardware innovation with in-house sensor design, Apple aims to reduce reliance on third parties and take full control over its core imaging technology.

Market Expectations and iPhone 17 Pro Connection

Industry observers believe that the rumored major redesign of the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera module could be linked to Apple’s development of this next-generation sensor. This move would not only strengthen Apple’s competitive edge but also set new benchmarks in mobile photography and videography.
