These days, the trend of ultra-slim phones is making a comeback in mobile design. While the iPhone 17 Air is making headlines, Samsung has also launched a new slim model called the Galaxy S25 Edge. Amidst all this, an old record by Vivo has resurfaced in discussions.
In fact, ultra-thin smartphones are trending once again. People are curious to know whether it’s really possible to make phones this thin in today’s time—and if yes, what compromises companies have to make to achieve this?
iPhone 17 Air: Just 6mm Thin!
It is being said that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 Air will be just 6mm thick, making it the slimmest iPhone ever. Previously, the iPhone 6 was 6.9mm thick. It is believed that Apple is trying to introduce a new design language with the “Air” name, similar to the MacBook Air.
However, fitting features like the battery, camera, and heat management in such a thin body is not easy. That’s why making it is quite a challenge.
Galaxy S25 Edge Also Joins the Race
Samsung is not far behind Apple. With the Galaxy S25 series, the company has introduced a new Galaxy S25 Edgevariant that is only 5.84mm thick. It is even slimmer and lighter than their previously slimmest phone, the Galaxy A8 (2015).
It includes the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, but the battery is only 3900mAh. So, there has been a slight compromise in battery capacity to achieve the slim design.
Vivo X5Max: Still the Slimmest Smartphone
When it comes to the slimmest smartphone, the Vivo X5Max launched in 2014 still holds the record. Its thickness was just 4.75mm! Despite being so thin, Vivo included features like Hi-Fi audio, a 3.5mm headphone jack, dual-SIM support, and a memory card slot.
To achieve this, Vivo used a special “cocoon-style” frame design to ensure the phone remained both slim and sturdy. It also had Yamaha’s sound processor, SABRE audio chips, and even a Hi-Fi DAC.
Are Ultra-Thin Phones Coming Back?
In today’s time, where there’s high demand for large batteries, better cameras, and AI processing, making ultra-slim designs isn’t easy. But if major brands like Apple and Samsung are heading in this direction, then other companies are likely to join the race soon.
If you’re a tech enthusiast, you can expect to see more new slim smartphones in the coming months. But it will be interesting to see how brands manage the balance between design and performance.
